Beginner Styling Tips
- When we start we all buy and kill trees.
We all buy loads of rubbish in the attempt to make a collection very quickly. Like stamp collection you first collect every thing. Then specialize in a region and finally in specific specialist area with a few prized examples. However, you do need to learn the craft of keeping and maintaining the trees. -

A Grouped Planting of Maples - Hiroshi Takeyama
- Kaede no Yoseue: A Grouped Planting of Maples by Hiroshi Takeyama
A "grouped planting" is the creation of a scene through plating multiple trees in one container. It realistically expresses natural scenes such as a grove of slender trees with sunlight passing through their leaves, a grove of wild pines growing along the shoreline, or an untouched forest deep within the mountains. It is something that beginners of bonsai can easily become accustomed to. -

Penjing Landscapes
- Tray landscapes are amongst the oldest forms of bonsai in China, Japan and Hawaii. Each is similar in many aspects but different and distinctive, too. Japan's tray landscapes are often patterned after the classical "bonkei" tray landscapes made up of muck, rock hills, sand and tiny plants. These were meant to be for temporary display. After World War II, Toshio Kawamoto coined "saikei" as another form of tray landscape that utilized a more sophisticated set of principles. -
