A Visit to Ginkgo Bonsai Nursery in Belgium

My wife was asked to travel to Belgium for business the first week in October 2004.  Having vacation left over and since I had never been to Europe, I decided to take the opportunity to go with her.  After I dropped her off at work each day I would travel to a different city to explore.  I had a great time walking around and seeing all of the history in cities such as Amsterdam, Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent and Brussels.

On October 7, I traveled to Ghent, Belgium to explore.  On the way back to the hotel that afternoon, I decided to stop in Laarne, Belgium to see if I could find Ginkgo Bonsai Nursery, a bonsai nursery that I had seen an advertisement for in the publication “Bonsai in Europe” magazine.  Located on a main road, it was fairly easy to find.  What I first saw when I arrived was the beautifully sculpted landscape specimens.  There were several very large nursery containers with expertly manicured Japanese yews and Japanese white pines that in their own right would have made outstanding large bonsai.  I started taking some photographs of them but was told to stop by the owners.  The owner’s wife asked if she could help me.  I told her that I was from the United States and was just visiting.  She said that they don’t allow photography because of thefts and insurance.  She said that I should go look around for a while and she would hold onto the camera until I was finished.
