Fig 2a - Trees in Nature
| In the beginning, I found inspiration by viewing other people’s work. I also started to look at trees while driving and walking. I went to shows and exhibits. My kids and neighbors looked at me like I was crazy because I’d stop the car to see a tree next to the road. I’d walk across my neighbor’s lawns to get a closer look and feel the leaves and bark on the trees in their yards. I played a game with myself while walking the dog and tried to identify each and every tree on the block one by one. I became very successful at it, picking out the oaks, myrtles, elms and pines in our local landscape! I explored the Internet and found bonsai sites and I added them to my favorite’s list so I wouldn’t forget where they were. I printed species guides for reference and made a binder full of them. I looked at photos in all of the website galleries that I could find. I made it a habit to go over the galleries weekly. I still seek them out!
Now, I look at my benches and see my work and I am amazed at nature and all four of her/his seasons! I see how far I have come over the last four years and I am amazed at my progress. In the forum on BonsaiTalk, there’s a great on-going post by members on trees for inspiration and you do get inspired after checking it out!
