Sometimes a B movie can rise above its big-budget brethren. The Siege of Firebase Gloria is a lean, straightforward film about a troupe of Marines defending an isolated outpost in Vietnam. While on reconnaissance, Sergeant-Major Hafner (R. Lee Ermey) gets a glimmering of the impending Tet offensive when he comes across a massacred village. When the patrol arrives at Firebase Gloria, Hafner takes command from the addled commanding officer and desperately tries to prepare the disorganized base for the coming assault. There's nothing remarkable about the story--this is a war movie--but it's not only told with efficient skill, it's strikingly clear-eyed about the brutalities committed by both sides of the war. The Viet Cong are depicted with as much sympathy as the Americans; in fact, through smart juxtapositions, the perspective of the native soldiers becomes increasingly clear and compelling, even though their dialogue is never translated. With clearly drawn yet realistic characters, a decent script, and unfancy but effective camerawork, Firebase Gloria paints a more vivid and unsettling portrait of the Vietnam experience than far more high-minded movies like Full Metal Jacket. Ermey gives a grounded, genuine performance, and straight-to-video star Wings Hauser is both scary and sad as a ruthless, alienated corporal. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars An incredible and heartbreaking war drama.   October 10, 2008
I caught this film many years ago on cable. I could've been around ten the first time that'd seen it or around that age. The begining of the film was really disturbing to me, but that really didn't stop in one place it kept happening throughout the film. It builds so well. The performances, to me are flawless, especially from the two leads, Wings Hauser and R. Lee Ermey. I caught this movie on an encore channel that was called 'True', for true drama and i don't think it's around anymore. This film is amazing and it's an incredible shame that it's not on DVD because it really should be. Honestly it's just as good as anyother of the war films that were done on this particular war. How anyone sold this film short, i have no idea. Brian-Trenchard Smith should be incredibly proud to have made a picture so great. His heart was clearly in this picture because it's just so moving. It's not like a dumbed down action flick. In the film you feel bad for both sides. The Americans and The Vietnamese, they're clearly both victims of the war. They should have a minor special edition atleast with a commentary track for this.

I purchased a vhs copy of firebase glora the seller send a poor copy I complained and he went through a lot of searching to get me a good copy I know that he in fact purchased a copy from another seller at retail cost and by doing so he actually lost money on the transaction All this just to make good on a sale .This seller is great to do business with I would buy from him any time I see him advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves DVD   February 23, 2008
It is a shame that this movie is not on DVD. Two other movies about Vietnam should also be on DVD, "The Boys In Company C" and "Purple Hearts". I am a Vietnam Veteran, having served with Foxtrot Co. 2/26 3rd Marine Division(5-68 thru 12-68). Salute to those who gave their all in the Vietnam War. Semper-Fidelis.
