A decent documentary, but it could've been better June 26, 2008 The Space Battleship Yamato: The Making of an Anime Legend documentary runs for roughly one hour and forty-five minutes. The documentary starts in 1973, and follows the story of how Space Battleship Yamato came to be, and how it ended up becoming a phenomenon in Japan. The documentary also touches on Space Battleship Yamato being dubbed into English and re-titled as Star Blazers, and how Star Blazers performed in the United States.
It was a decent documentary, although I am a little disappointed in the last section of it. The history of the franchise over the past twenty years has been glossed over (there was no mention of Yamato 2520, the sequel that Nishizaki attempted to produce in the mid-1990's). Also the conflicts between Nishizaki and Matsumoto weren't mentioned, either. Outside of that, though, the documentary is rather informative.
There are a few extras included on the DVD, but the most interesting are probably the Japanese toy commercials and the "original pilot film."
If you're a fan of Space Battleship Yamato and/or Star Blazers, this is worth picking up in order to acquire more information about the history of the franchise.
Worth it if you are a real fan. March 8, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Really enjoyed the story behind the series. Maybe too short.
