Product Description Japanese for Busy People is the most popular Japanese language textbook series in the world. With over 20 components including texts, workbooks, CDs, videos and teacher's manuals, it is also one of the most comprehensive. Now, a decade after its first revision, the entire series is being redesigned, updated and consolidated to meet the needs of 21st-century students and businesspeople who want to learn natural, spoken Japanese as effectively as possible in a limited amount of time. The book features not only a sleek, new design but also a unit structure that groups thematically linked lessons together, making it easier than ever to learn Japanese. Moreover, it now comes with a CD containing audio for the dialogues and listening exercises from the text. The exercises in the book have also been thoroughly revised to incorporate more comprehension and production tasks. Many of these exercises are illustrated, making for a stimulating learning experience, and the purpose of each one is clearly stated. This first of three volumes introduces "survival Japanese"-the absolute minimum amount of Japanese needed to live in Japan. Thus, the vocabulary and grammatical items it introduces are limited to about a third of what is typically introduced in a first-year course. In addition, the book features notes on Japanese culture intended to expand the learner's understanding of Japan, its customs and people. Japanese for Busy People I is available in two formats: romanized and kana. The Romanized Version uses romanized Japanese throughout, with kana in the Opening Dialogues of each lesson. The Kana Version-exposing students to hiragana and katakana from the very beginning-uses only kana. The content of the two books is otherwise exactly the same. The companion volume, Japanese for Busy People 1: The Workbook for the Revised 3rd Edition contains a variety of illustrated exercises for mastering the basic sentence patterns presented in the main text.

Much better than the last version September 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First: The romanized version of this book is designed to get people speaking and understanding the spoken language in the shortest amount of time possible. In that context, having a romanized version of the text makes sense.
Second: This latest incarnation of the Japanese for Busy People series, is in my opinion, a great improvement over the previous version. I live and work in Japan, and I am taking university classes to learn Japanese. My sensei uses the JBP series.
The JBP series may not be all things to all people, but it has become a very good learning tool for the language. In the previous version the grammar points were not always clear, and there was little to highlight the correlation of the grammar points to the exercises in the chapter. The correlation was there, it just wasn't always obvious.
This latest version of the book, is laid out much better. Each part of the chapter seems to build on what you just accomplished, thereby reinforcing the lesson.
I would not have recommended the previous version for someone trying to "self study", this version I think could be used for that purpose, though it is still better with a teacher to explain the more subtle aspects of the language.
Very Useful for a TOTAL beginner. September 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think this book does a great job working with the business oriented very basic beginner. For my intents & purposes this book is fantastic - at this point, I'm not looking to have an in depth understanding of the language, I'm looking to be able to communicate just enough with Japanese speaking individuals. The book jumps right in with sentences and useful business phrases written in romaji (romanized writing of Japanese sounds/words) so that learning, understanding and speaking these phrases can begin immediately without having to learn the new alphabet. At this time, I am "illiterate" when it comes to Japanese (Kanji/Hiragana) but I can say enough phrases to get my point across. Should I desire to be able to read, write or better communicate, I would probably suggest a book that deals more thoroughly with the Japanese characters.
Japanese for Busy People 1 June 27, 2007 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am using the book in conjunction with a class at a local college. The book is proving to be very useful. I received the book in good condition and I am very pleased with it.
Reconsider before buying June 21, 2007 9 out of 19 found this review helpful
Not for the casual tourist who will vacation in Japan. Using this book, you will not learn the necessary phrases for a short trip to Japan. If you want to learn common phrases, do not buy this book. It was designed for serious students of the language.
On that note, it is unbelievable that a text book of this caliber would be Romanized. If you are a serious student, then take this review seriously: learn hiragana immediately. Do not buy this book; buy the kana version of this book, and begin studying hiragana while you are waiting for it to arrive in the mail. If your college forces you to buy the Romanized version (like mine did), do future students a favor by requesting that they switch over to the kana version.
Although my review of this book sounds harsh, do not be mislead. I like the Japanese for Busy People text book series, and, like all serious students of the Japanese language, despise Romanized books. Buy the kana version.
