Great Music...Great Lyrics...Great Performers January 18, 2002 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the most talented and underappreciated groups...wish they were still together. Check out "Boys Want Sex in the Morning" and "A Lonely Grain of Corn" from Yellow Tail Records to listen to some of their prime material. Classics.
Silly and serious at the same time...? It can happen!! May 8, 1999 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Uncle Bonsai, now sadly defunct save for a few "reunion" concerts, deserves a greater cult of devout listeners. This "band" (actually one alto-pitched man with a guitar and two female vocalists) is original, folksey, and blessedly absurd...just what everybody needs sometimes. Imagine Joan Baez has the Dead Milkmen's love children and they team up with the distant cousin of The Violent Femmes...Uncle Bonsai! While the majority of the songs were obviously meant to be silly and fun ("Family Restaurant" and "K-Mart" for example), several have a serious theme and are actually quite moving ("Midas Touch" and even "Men and Women"). All are constructed with incredible harmonies and clever lyrics, and all are fun to sing along to. Uncle Bonsai appeals to fans of all music genres! This album deserves a place in your collection.
