Amazon.com The world captured in the neoclassical mini-epics of pianist-composer Tim Janis is an idyllic place bursting with chest-swelling grandeur: breathtaking coastlines, luminous sunsets, endless amber waves of grain. Janis, performing on piano and synthesizer, expresses his vision by writing lushly orchestrated, soundtracklike works that he liberally adorns with swelling strings, yearning pennywhistle, emotive cymbal splashes, and heart-tugging crescendos--each brief piece charting a path to a happily-ever-after destination. The approach may be over-the-top for some listeners, but for others, it is an uplifting elixir of audio splendor. For Janis, that's the point. He is enthused by music's therapeutic potential and refers to his recordings and concerts as "music with a mission." So yes, at times Janis is a little guilty of overreaching in his pursuit of one shining moment after another. But the 35-year-old Maine resident, who operates his own independent label and in 2001 topped classical sales charts with his charitable Music of Hope, can also stir deeper emotions on a John Williams-like scale. Notable selections here include "Cape Ann," "Alton Bay," "Grand Lake," Ocean Isle," and a reflective piano interlude, "Star Island." The disc also has a hidden 15th track. --Terry Wood

familiar and lovely August 28, 2008 Like a family where all the children look similar, Janis' music is clearly his own. Some sections are reminiscent of other pieces of his, but not so much so as to be repetitive. This is a pleasant contemplative album, typical of what I have come to expect and appreciate in his work.
I have been listening to Beautiful America quite a bit lately and wanted a fresh sound. This CD, though not as wonderful as Beautiful America, delivered 100% of what I was hoping for. It currently rates 2nd or 3rd on my list of Janis favorites.

I have three of this remarkable composer's CDs. This is my favorite. If you are like me and aren't able to actually travel to locations where the ocean surf and the tide can wash over you, then get this CD and let the music wash over you and take you away. Just close your eyes and you'll be able to see all the beauty of the sea and the mountains, the flowing rivers and the wind. My first experience with his music was Tim Janis, An American composer in concert. I didn't think anything could top that, but this one does. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Another sublime Tim Janis CD February 22, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Many artists have a good CD or two and then seem to regress in their creative/artistic development, but the music of Tim Janis continues to progress and this latest CD is evidence. "A Thousand Summers" is a delight for this Tim Janis fan with a variety of songs that are fresh and alive topped, in my opinion, by "Grand Lake". Any Tim Janis fan should be very happy with this CD. The melodies are well worth repeated listens, which I always find calming and uplifting. For those of you who haven't heard his music, I would suggest getting this CD and if you listen to it five times, I promise you'll be hooked. I've encouraged multiple people to try this and those who did have become fans and repeatedly give thanks for the suggestion, and provide glowing comments on the music.
