Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
"Armed with the ethereal mystery of the Cocteau Twins and the crunchy guitars of Lush, Secret Shine's songs come in striking musical layers ... a stirring and melodic blend of shoegazing bliss." -- Amplifier

"Songs crescendo, shake, and shudder like a dense, hot mist falling on your shoulders, filling your head with visions of vistas and weightless elation. It's flat-out majestic on the orchestral strings ... like a trip by rail through snowy mountain ranges." -- Big Takeover

"Immense swirling soundscapes that reek of the nostalgia of Slowdive but bristle with the undoubted influence of contemporaries Sigur Ros and Mogwai provide the orchestral backdrop to the mesmerizing ethereal boy-girl vocal harmonies. Irrepressibly gorgeous." -- Tasty Fanzine

All of the Stars is Secret Shine's second studio album, and their first in fourteen years. The band took an unscheduled nine-year break before returning in 2004 with the release of their back catalog on Clairecords, followed by two emphatically received EPs of new material in 2006 and live shows in Europe and America.

Although it could sit comfortably alongside shoegaze classics like Slowdive's Souvlaki, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, and The Pale Saints' The Comforts of Madness, All of the Stars is a unique treasure and possibly the new wave of "stargaze."

4 out of 5 stars Oh yeah, did this hit the spot!   April 25, 2008

I'm a pure sucker for good shoegazer, the soft girl's voice, big guitar washes, you know. These guys (and the essential ethereal Jamie) have been missing for ages, but history doesn't really matter since I never knew they existed back in the 90's anyway. All the personal tragedies and breakups don't change the fact that this CD rocks, a line drive right down the middle, songs with Lush-like cascades, solid melodies, pretty much unintelligible lyrics buried in noise, completely shoe satisfying. And from what I've been able to hear, a much more polished effort than their ancient output anyway.

Okay, it's not perfect, some of the songs miss a little. "Stars" has that same off-balance feel "Deluxe" had, which doesn't mean I don't like it, it just doesn't feel 100% there (though it darn sure is 100% Lush). "Cafe" and "Another Day" drag a bit, a little too breathy soft in the pre-cascade passages. But so what, the point is that if you missed your shoegazer fix, and Emma's Sing Sing hasn't filled in enough, here is a follow up to "Spooky" with a dude singing in places.

That's not completely fair, maybe I'm stretching their Lushness too much, and songs like "Leaves" are evidence they have more in them than being pure shoe, but we'll leave that for another day and another CD, I hope. In the meantime, crank the volume and eat your fill. Yum!
