Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Departing from the tribal themes that occupied him through most of the 1990s, Roach takes a philosophical leap into Void, directing his endless reverbs and glowering synth programs toward the speck at the center of the universe. Eschewing the indigenous drums and didgeridoos of his Dreamtime Return-era work, pieces like "Between the Gray and the Purple" could as easily be the soundtrack to a psychological thriller as a rumination on infinity. "Void Memory One" refracts sheets of pure frequency across a pitch-black galaxy; "Cloud of Unknowing" taps the elements in a maelstrom of cosmic wind and solar fire. What--too much imagistic hyperbole for you? Roach invites such musings, if only because he carries you down those dark corridors so convincingly. Sequenced as one continuous piece, Void is an astral-gothic collage of fear, transcendence, and weightlessness; a high-water mark of space music; and one of Roach's finest hours. --James Rotondi

4 out of 5 stars This Cd Is Perfect.......UGH!!!   November 8, 2008

.....when you've had guests over for the evening & they've started to stay past their welcome.......all the booze has been drunk......the conversation has dried up.......the clock is about to reach Midnight.......but they WON'T leave......turn the topic of conversation around to "experimental" music & throw on Steve Roach's "The Magnificent Void". I guarantee that they'll be grabbing their coats & heading towards the door after 5 minutes of listening to this particular cd!
This one is a big zero. It has all the charm of a diesel truck engine idleling outside your window...... Sorry Steve, but I guess you can't hit a home run all the time!

5 out of 5 stars Weightless Ghosts   February 26, 2008

With 'The Magnificent Void' Steve Roach achieves a pure mesmerizing state of time suspension. In controlled long undulations supported by the gift of silence the listener is caught breathing with the rhythm. Roach uses a sculpture approach to form sound masses that hover separated yet together animate in slow synchrony. These sound patterns imply volume and are given weightlessness with spaces of ghostly diminuendo. . . This is an unsurpassed masterful recording.

5 out of 5 stars Dramatic Moody Space Trip   October 21, 2007

Out of all the Steve Roach albums I have (about a dozen) this one is the most moody. It is somewhat ominous and intimidating. But do not pass this up because you scare easy. Take the journey Steve Roach has plotted for us this time around. This type of music can be called dark ambient, and is best enjoyed with high-end speakers or headphones. This album is not as relaxing as some of his other albums, so if you are in the market for that, don't get this. As someone else said, this is for "active listening". Pretty dark eerie stuff, which is perfect if you are in the mood for that sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best   July 13, 2007

If you enjoyed the star ride in "2001" A Space Odyssey," you are going to love this one. This is very dramatic, dark, ambient. Think of it as an hour long ride through a black hole, put on your headphones, and buckle your seat belts. Not for relaxing. This is for active listening. Sci-fi ambient journey. Excellent.
