Product Description TOP HAT BLUEBERRYPERFECT FOR SMALL SPACES, CONTAINERS AND BONSAI. FULL SIZE FRUIT ON DWARF PLANTS!Top Hat Blueberry simply has to be seen to be believed. Here is a beautiful, moundshaped, compact shrub that is ideal for containers and small spaces, loaded with so many flowers in spring it looks like a white-flowering heather, followed by hundreds of delicious full-size blueberry fruits that make it doubly decorative. Top Hat is also becoming a favorite of bonsai enthusiasts, since the plant so easily allows itself to be restricted in a bonsai dish and shaped into a decorative bonsai accent, even flowering and fruiting as a bonsai accent. Developed from a breeding program at Michigan State University by one of the country's leading blueberry specialists, plants are cold hardy and easy to grow. Round, firm, flavorful fruits are a dusky blue just like those you find in the stores - perfect for fresh eating, making jam and baking into muffins or pies.Hardiness Zone: 5-8; hardy to -25FSize at Maturity: 2 ft. by 2 ft.Soil Preference: Acid 4.5 to 5.5 pHLight Needs: Full sun or partial shadeBlueberries are valued for their ornamental foliage, flowers and berries. Their small bell shaped flowers contrast beautifully with the leathery leaves during the spring and summer and are followed by edible round berries which turn purple when ripe to eat.Proper name: Vaccinium corymbosum argustifoliumThe plant you will receive is growing in a 4" pot and is about 3" tall.

Highly disappointed July 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Admittedly its hard to 'ship' a live plant, but this was borderline pathetic. it arrived completely rootbound, and although it was watered thoroughly, the shipping was a box with the plant, and filled with packing peanuts. it died within a week.
Honest expectations July 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this same plant from Hirts and from another company at the same time. The plant that I received from Hirts was as described, approximately 3 inches tall. Granted the plant I received from another company was doubled in size but I knew what I ordered from Hirts and was not dissapointed. The plant was healthy. I did my research and knew that blueberries required a more acidic soil than I was planning to use and planted with a blueberry fertilizer. The plant is thriving and slowly growing bigger. I am still not dissapointed. I knew from research that the plants do not fully mature for several years (about 3) but can bear flowers and fruit prior to then but is not common. I expect that in the next 2 years or so to start having blueberries! Plant was as described, arrived quickly, and is doing as expected. Would definitely order from Hirts again if needed.
Boo for Blue June 28, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this as a gift for my father for Father's Day. He likes gardening and I thought this would be a fun plant for him. When he got it it was almost dead. He tried his best to bring it back to life, but eventually he threw it out. He said it was tiny and looked like a dying twig. I got the blueberry bush because it had better reviews then the hanging strawberry basket provided by the same company. However, I had the same disappointing results that other customers had with the strawberry basket.
I would not buy this as a gift!!!!!
Small but Healthy May 7, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I received this top hat about 10 days ago. It was only 2.5 inches tall but had green leaves growing out of the main stalk. I transplanted it into a much larger pot with some peat moss, perlite and a little potting soil and it seems like it is doing fine. Blueberries love acidic soil so make sure your soil is on the acidic side. Also water with ph balanced water in the 6 range.
dead plant - no response from company March 29, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Be careful buying from these guys - I received this plant from them with an enclosed note that said it was "dormant for the winter - but would be fine in the spring" - I figured, that makes sense. So, I did my part kept on watering it - and now it turns out the plant is actually dead. I emailed the company 2 times about it and got no response back.
for what its worth
