BEST TURKEY EVER!!! December 4, 2008 We wanted to try something new this year for Thanksgiving. Cooking a turkey on the grill following a Bobby Flay recipie. I changed all the grates and flavorizer bars in my Webber Genesis to stainless steel. I then bought this thermometer. The recipie called for presise tempurature control. We started kind of late due to some family obligations. At 3pm we fired up the grill and placed the turkey with the tempurature probe placed in the proper position. Basting was required every 10 minutes for the first 30 minutes. the thermometer worked like a charm. no comunication errors no problems till it came time to baste for the third time. Why was there so much black smoke comming out of the the bbq? Because the entire turkey was going up in flames. We turned off the bbq. put out the fire and transfered the turkey into the oven. the oregon scientific thermometer never missed a beat. 3hours and 45 minutes later the voice said it's almost done. and you know what? it was. Turns out we served the best turkey ever. very moist. I highly recomend this thermometer. very high quality product.
Oregon Scientific Digital Thermometer December 1, 2008 This is an excellent product, much easier to use than the previous one that I owned (different brand). Shipping was very fast.
Accurate, Simple, and Fun November 30, 2008 I bought mine for Thanksgiving and it worked out perfectly. I was even able to adjust my stove because the degree knob was not accurately adjusted. For the fun of it I tested it on a few different items like taking my own temperature, read 98.6 consistently.
Its simple and fun to use. The screen is self lit, you have the option of using preset temperatures for cooking specific types of meat, fish, or poultry or you can set your own desired temperature. The voice indicators are loud and easy to understand and for a bonus you have a timer built in.
I have already shown this device to a few friends who also want one. Makes Christmas easy for me.
Not very good November 27, 2008 Thanksgiving a.m. and I tried to use this and it didn't work. I read the instructions 20 times but couldn't get it to work. Went to the OS web site but nothing helpful. I finally read comments on Amazon.com about resetting both units at the same time, which got it to work, finally. Amazing that there is nothing about it in the instructions. I went about 30 feet from the kitchen and sometimes the connection failed and I had to go back and wait for it to reconnect. When it works it's fine, but if I had the option I'd buy something easier to use.
Great concept, needs quality improvement November 20, 2008 I received this as a gift in late 2007. This product is a great concept, as I've been able to use it in a variety of applications: grilling, baking/roasting, and an outdoor smoker.
Unfortunately, it stopped working after 4 uses. The temperature reading would be way off, like 178 degrees at room temperature, 59 degrees for an ice slurry (chipped ice/water; used to determine accuracy), etc.
The Oregon Scientific website was difficult to navigate and find information about the product, but once I found information it recommended replacing the probe. This was a $10 cost + s/h. I shouldn't have to do this for a new product.
It worked once, then the problems started again. It's within the warranty period of 1 year, so we'll see of Oregon Scientific honors it. I'm being cautiosly optimistic.
In the meantime, be aware that this product requires some quality improvement to become more consistent.
