BONZAI !!!!!! October 25, 2007 This is one of those movies that's lost a bit with age, specially since they've shown it so many times on TV. The highlight of this DVD are the featturetes which happily include all of the people involved, even Pat Morita who died shortly after his participation here. My only complaint is that they show Daniel's flying kick over a dozen times as well as the same behind-the-scenes beach rehearsal clip, over and over again. The best part: the movie writer's complaint that whenever anybody learns about his work in this movie, the first thing they invariably utter is "wax on-wax off" (no question there, specially since those words always come up to my mind every time I wax my car !).
An 80's classic! October 23, 2007 New Jersey teen Daniel (Ralph Macchio) with his mother has just moved to San Fernado California and tries to fit in with his new town. He falls for a beautiful girl (Elizabeth Shue) but gets picked on at school and sometimes out of school by a gang of vicious karate expert bullies called Cobra Kai leaving him bruised and sometimes scarred. Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) is an old Japanese handyman who helps Daniel with his peers and problems as he teaches him the art of self-defense that just might help him even at the karate championship.
Entertaining and inspiring drama that became a major hit in 1984 and i could see why! The performances by the actors especially Pat Morita whom got an academy award nomination for best supporting actor are excellent and so is the direction. I love how they actually did some great cheoregraphy in martial arts and there's some humor at times, it's an 80's classic that shouldn't be missed.
This special edition DVD has very good picture and sound with good extras like audio commentary from the filmmakers and stars, "The Way of the Karate Kid" multi-featurette, "Beyond The Form" featuette, "East Meets West" composers notebook, "Life of Bonsai" featurette and of course the trailer to this.
The classic that every kid can relate to October 20, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw this movie in the theater as a teen and now my teen asked me to find it for him to watch. We downloaded it from unbox and it was so worth it. It really has held up remarkably well and it still brought a tear to my eye at the end. He wants to see the second movie now because the first was such a hit.
Wax on...wax off.
Miyagi is great October 5, 2007 This is a pretty good movie, which in essence tells the story of the kid who has sand kicked in his face, gets taught by a master and then fights the bullies in a Karate tournament.
The fight scenes are well done and Pat Morita (now sadly deceased) as Mr Miyagi steals every scene he is in. His training of the kid takes unusual forms, such as cleaning the cars, painting the house etc. The moment of revelation for Daniel is a great scene, when he realises that all this seemingly meaningless work serves its purpose in mastering a martial art.
This is a movie with a few little morality tales. On the downside sadly, sometimes these messages are a little to obviously waved in front your face. Another aspect of the film that I found very irratating was the 1980's pop songs (not the original score which was fine). I was never a fan of 1980's pop in the 80's, even less so now, and worse still the songs concerned were really only played to lyrically re-enforce an already obvious point in the film.
However, overall this is an entertaining, if flawed film, that is worth getting if you can pick it up cheap.
Entertainment for the whole family September 13, 2007 As a mother of boys, I am always looking out for movies about boys that will hold interest and give a positive theme. The Karate Kid is just perfect! It has a few curse words, but they ARE few. My boys range from 15 years to 6 years, and they all stayed with this one. Yes, the cheesy 80's styles and music were good for a chuckle or two, but otherwise the message is timeless. Enjoy!! Note: My boys enjoyed the second one aw well...
